Apertura 2017 Week 4 Results: Veracruz 3, Santos 2

The final game of week 4 featured things that don’t happen very often based on recent history-most notably, for only the 2nd time since the start of the Clausura 2017, Santos lost-they dropped a 3-2 decision at home to Veracruz. Cristian Menendez gave Veracruz an early lead with a 34th-minute goal, then in the 56th minute Jorge Enriquez’s header got Santos even. Veracruz quickly re-took the lead on an Adrian Luna header in the 59th minute and a Christian Valdez goal in the 64th minute to extend their lead to 3-1. The refs let them play at the end until Santos got a Brian Lozano goal 5 minutes into extra time, but there would be no rallying for another tie. Santos now has matched their entire loss total from last tournament after 4 weeks-1. This also is only the 3rd time in their last 21 games at Santos that Veracruz has won-coming in their record in the last 20 games there was 2-15-3.
