Clausura 2017 Round 17 Results: Morelia 2, Monterrey 1

Mission Accomplished-Morelia has managed to avoid demotion and sneak into the playoffs thanks to a 2-1 season-ending win at Monterrey. Gaston Lezcano put Monarcas ahead first with a 31st minute score, but Monterrey pulled even late when Dorlan Pabon scored on a PENAL! in the 86th minute. But in extra time, Morelia’s savior saved the best for last-Raul Ruidiaz beat the clock to send Morelia to the playoffs and Jaguares down to Ascenso MX. It also might clinch Ruidiaz his second straight scoring championship as he now has the league lead with 9. Morelia got the tiebreaker over America & Pachuca to get into the playoffs because the first tiebreaker isn’t head-to-head record…it’s goal differential. Morelia’s was +3 compared to 0 for America & Pachuca so they are off to Tijuana to open the playoffs. As for the Rayados, they will wait for the Toluca-Santos result tomorrow to see where they’ll finish-if it’s a tie they will finish 2nd otherwise they’ll be 3rd. That’s the good news. The bad news? One constant either way in the quarterfinals-Tigres.
