The semi-annual “Clasico Capitalisto” took place today, pitting Mexico City’s top 2 teams against each other. It served to only further tighten the playoff race as America played its way back into contention with a 3-2 win over Pumas. Silvio Romero put America on the board first with a 32nd-minute score, then Oribe Peralta added a goal right before halftime to give America a 2-0 lead. But as they’ve done the last few weeks Pumas put together a second-half rally, as Nicolas Castillo added to his league-leading goal total with back-to-back goals to tie it at 2-2. But it was not quite to be again as Cecilio Dominguez’s 81st-minute goal was the difference for America and they held on the rest of the way. The win gets America into a 3-way tie for 7th with Pumas & Atlas, but for now Atlas would be the odd team out if the playoffs began now.
