Toluca was able to keep pace with the leaders today in the standings, but it wasn’t easy as they had to work hard to escape last-place Leon with a 3-2 win. Rodrigo Salinas scored Toluca’s first goal on a close-range kick after a shot on a corner kick went off the top crossbar, the goalie got a hand on it but not enough to keep it from going in. Leon then tied it up on Mauro Boselli’s 40th-minute close-range header. Toluca re-took the lead at the start of the second half on a Fernando Uribe header to make it 2-1, but Guillermo Burdisso got Leon back to 2-2 with a 58th-minute goal. In the 83rd minute, Jesus Mendez netted the game-winner for Toluca. The loss leaves Leon as the first team likely to be eliminated from playoff contention as they are now 8 points out of 8th place with 7 games left, and still in last place with only 1 win this half.
