Clausura 2017 Round 8 Results: Queretaro 4, Pumas 3

It’s not a fluke-Queretaro is seriously en fuego. They hosted Pumas today with the visitors coming off an instant classic rally last week for a tie-and they very nearly did it again but it was too little too late as the Gallos Blancos continued their incredible ascent up the standings with an exciting 4-3 home win. Pumas took the first lead just 9 minutes in on a Marcos Britos header, but Angel Sepulveda pulled the hosts even in the 31st minute. Then disaster struck for Pumas right before halftime-on a Queretaro free kick from near midfield, Pablo Jaquez went up for the header next to a Queretaro player but the ball went off Jaquez’ head at a bad angle and into the net for the OWN GOAL! That gave Queretaro a 2-1 lead at halftime. Emanuel Villa then made it 3-1 Queretaro with a 64th-minute goal, and Camilo Da Silva added what seemed like a blowout-clinching goal in the 71st minute to make it 4-1. Could Pumas pull off another from-the-dead rally? They once again tried hard. In the 84th minute, Jesus Gallardo scored to cut the lead to 2, and in second half extra time Bryan Rabello got Pumas to within 1. Unfortunately for the visitors that second goal came too little too late and Pumas came just short of 2 incredible rallies from 3-goal deficits in a row. The win vaults Queretaro, as of this posting, into 5th place in the standings-in just the last 3 weeks they have gone from 17th to pushing for a top-4 spot in the standings at about the halfway point.
