Morelia played the “desperate measures” card earlier this week facing a must-win game today against Jaguares. Although it was against perhaps the most inept offense in the league, it at least worked for today in a 2-1 road win. Andy Polo scored first to put Monarcas up 1-0 in the 27th minute but Gabriel Achiller gave it back in the 33rd minute by stretching out to deflect a Jaguares cross pass in front of the goal and instead sending it in the net for the OWN GOAL! He was saved 8 minutes later when Raul Ruidiaz, struggling to replicate his league-leading scoring output form last tournament, ended his 4-game scoreless drought in the 41st minute. Morelia had a late scare when they gave Jaguares a PENAL! in the 85th minute, but escaped with the victory when Christian Bermudez failed to score on the kick. For this day, at least, Morelia got everything it needed as it tries to avoid demotion-a win, a Veracruz loss & a Jaguares loss. Next week brings a much less favorable slate though, as Monarcas have to try to get a wining streak going against league-leading Toluca while Veracruz has the hapless Tigres & Jaguares gets a bounceback chance with last-place Puebla. Jaguares also gets a little rest too as this was their 3rd game in 8 days between last weekend and Tuesday’s round 1 game.
