After a week where the focus was a lot of off-field news, it was finally time to get back to on-field action with the first round 3 game tonight. The matchup was the red teams both needing wins to get out of the demotion zone, Veracruz vs. Atlas, and the home team did their part to stay ahead of Morelia & demotion with a 1-0 shutout win. The only goal came in the 19th minute-Leobardo Lopez headed a pass towards the goal that hit the side post but took a lucky bounce behind the goalie and into the net. It’s the 2nd goal in 3 games for Lopez. The Tiburones Rojos held Atlas off the scoreboard the rest of the way, surviving a brief scare when they drew an Amarilla right before stoppage time ended in the second half, but they got a big win and for now pull clearer of Morelia in the ratio table and, if things go right, Veracruz has a chance to get in front of Jaguares and get even more breathing room. Veracruz also is now 2/3 of the way to their win total from the entire Apertura 2016 tournament-3-after 3 games, so they should be improved this tournament barring an epic collapse. One concern of note-defenseman Kristian Alvarez has now picked up Amarillas in all 3 games so far, meaning he is now only 2 more away from an automatic 1 game suspension for accumulating 5 in a tournament.
