Clausura 2017 Round 2 Results: Monterrey 2, Guadalajara 2

Being a lifelong Washington, DC sports fan I know a ton about choking. So it’s no surprise that quite an egregious example of choking came today in the form of Guadalajara at Monterrey. Don’t let the 2-2 tie score fool you, the Chivas more than gave away 3 points. It started off very well for the visitors, as Rodolfo Pizarro scored in the 9th minute to give Guadalajara the early 1-0 lead, and as they kept the shots going Edgar Hernandez put one in just over 11 minutes later for a 2-0 lead. Then it all went wrong fast. First was in the 33rd minute when Juan Vazquez made a slide going for the ball but got the nearby Monterrey player instead, and right in front of the referee…Rojas! HE GONE! So the Chivas were a man down-until right after halftime, when after disagreeing with the earlier ejection Jair Pereira drew an apparent delay of game call, which means Amarillas from the ref. He literally shrugged it off while giving the ref a smirk of sorts-which apparently the ref took offense to. Rojas! HE GONE! Guadalajara was now down 2 men for the last 40 minutes! And the Rayados took advantage-when things finally got restarted, Rogelio Funes Mori got Monterrey on the board in less than 4 minutes, and Dorian Pabon added the eventual game-tying goal in the 70th minute. Only a couple late Guadalajara saves kept this one at a tie, but I think Antonio Mohamed’s side has to be happy with a point here. Matias Almeyda? Not so much. Let’s see if Guadalajara decides to appeal either of the ejections, namely Pereira’s. That was a hair trigger reaction from the ref. They might just because that’s at least 2 players they will otherwise be without for at least next week.
