Clausura 2017 Round 2 Results: Tijuana 6, Puebla 2

Coming off arguably the most disappointing result of round 1, Tijuana was looking to bounce back into form this week, assisted by the return of a couple players and coach Miguel Herrera from opening-round suspensions stemming from the Apertura 2016 playoffs, and hopefully showcase more of what made them the top scoring team last tournament. Did they ever, turning a close match with visiting Puebla late into a lopsided 6-2 victory. It didn’t even take 3 minutes for the offense to get started courtesy of Aviles Hurtado scoring Tijuana’s first goal of the season, but Puebla tied it up in the 40th minute on a PENAL! They were awarded a penalty kick and Pedro Canelo converted. But right before halftime Hurtado scored his second to give Tijuana a 2-1 advantage. In the second half, Patricio Araujo got Puebla back even at 2-2 with a 59th minute score, but Paul Arriola put the Xolos back ahead 3-2 just 2 minutes later. That started the rout. 5 minutes after that, Milton Caraglio scored to double the lead to 4-2. In the 79th minute Puebla’s Robert Herrera did his part by seemingly knocking down an attacking Tijuana player with his right arm…Rojas! HE GONE! Based on a replay I watched this was a VERY questionable call as the angle I saw suggested there may not have been much if any contact so I would not be surprised if Puebla appeals this call. When play resumed in the 81st minute Victor Malcorra immediately shot one in for a 5-2 Tijuana lead, and 2nd-half substitute Joe Corona finished off the rout just a couple minutes later. And just like that, Tijuana sent notice that they’re back and they’ve seemingly put their opening round loss way behind them.
