Clausura 2017 Round 1 Results: Cruz Azul 1, Necaxa 0

One of the big second-half stories-to-be is sure to be if Necaxa can keep up it’s run of underdog success in its first tournament following it’s latest promotion from Ascenso MX and a playoff berth in the Apertura. The answer, at least in round 1, as they were on the wrong end of a 1-0 shutout at Cruz Azul. Adrian Aldrete headed in a corner kick in the 18th minute for the only score. Both sides had and took plenty of scoring chances in the first half but that offense was almost nonexistent from both sides after halftime, including some of Necaxa’s trademark physical play from last tournament-on that note, however, is firebrand Edson Puch picking up one of the 2 Amarillas Necaxa got-there has to be some balance because he’s out a game if he gets 4 more this tournament.
