Promotion Watch: Dorados Halfway Back To Top Tier

The second-tier Ascenso MX Apertura 2016 Tournament concluded yesterday with the newly-demoted Sinaloa Dorados, in their first tournament back in the second tier after a year in Bancomer MX that ended with a last-place finish in the Clausura 2016 Tournament, taking the first step towards a quick return trip by winning the Ascenso Apertura 2016 Championship with a 1-0 win over Atlante for a 4-2 aggregate victory. Dorados entered the playoffs as the #5 seed and needed tiebreakers to advance through both their quarterfinal and semifinal matchups, as they both ended in 4-4 ties. They needed a 3-3 road tie to overcome a home 1-1 tie in the quarterfinals against #4 seed Potros, then they blew a 3-0 game 1 win against #2 seed Mineros, losing the second game 4-1 but somehow moving on in tiebreakers. But they had no such trouble with #6 seed Atlante in the finals with a 3-2 road win and 1-0 home win.
Dorados will now meet the winner of the Clausura 2017 Tournament in a final faceoff with the winner being promoted to the Liga Bancomer MX for the 2017-18 season.
