Apertura 2016 Semifinals: America 2, Necaxa 0

For most of the last 3+ months, including the playoffs, Necaxa has been quite the underdog story of the tournament and were hoping to keep that run going to the Gran Fiesta Finals. Unfortunately for them the story ended tonight at America with a 2-0 win for the host team and a 3-1 aggregate victory. It was largely a defensive game with no scoring until William Da Silva scored in the 73rd minute for the eventual game and series-winner. Oribe Peralta added his second of the postseason in the 83rd minute for the final margin. Necaxa really tried hard to take it on offense, including a 4-0 shots on goal advantage, but just couldn’t get it into the net and their impressive tournament run ends just a little short. One interesting note given the style of play thus far, especially by Necaxa-no cards/warnings whatsoever in this game.
America now moves on to play Tigres in the Gran Final-because America did advance this far, unless things have changed the finals will be delayed a couple weeks due to America being scheduled to play in the Clubes de Mundial tournament next weekend. The finals were scheduled for Thursday & next Sunday but now will be pushed back to December 22 & 25.
