Apertura 2016 Playoffs: Tigres 5, Pumas 0

The second leg of the Universitario Clasico quarterfinals matchup was, depending on which Felinos you rooted for, a possible statement or an absolute disaster, and it was much more of a blowout than the 5-0 score suggested in Tigres’ absolute mauling and then some of Pumas, which led to Tigres winning the aggregate by a ridiculous 7-2. The writing was pretty much on the wall just 3 minutes in when Tigres star striker Andre-Pierre Gignac, coming off a very down regular season in which he was trying to defend his scoring title (not helped in part by a lot of travel away from the club early on for French national team duties), scored the first goal of the night, on his way to what would be a hat trick statement performance. And as further indication as to how bad the night would be for Pumas, the second Tigres goal came when a Pumas’ Dario Veron was in the right place to intercept a Tigres cross pass just outside the Pumas goal zone but the ball took a bad deflection off his lower leg and went the wrong way-OWN GOAL! That gave Tigres a surprise 2-0 advantage just 25 minutes in. After Gignac’s two second-half goals in the 74th & 78th minute, Andy Delort finished off the high-five rout with an 88th minute score for the hosts. With the blowout-and-then-some win, Tigres advance to the semifinals and will wait for the rest of the games to play out to see who they will play in the next round, but one thing is for sure-as they were the #3 seed, and not the lowest-advancing seed, they will not play Tijuana if they move on.
