Apertura 2016 Round 17 Results: Pumas 3, Puebla 0

In the final game of the regular season Pumas held the balance of the lower half of the playoffs in their hands. And unlike the other teams in win-and-in situations, they did not disappoint, cruising to a lopsided 3-0 shutout at Puebla. While there was no scoring in the first half, Puebla gifted Pumas the big second-half advantage in the 44th minute, when Gabriel Araujo got frustrated with a Pumas attacker getting away with a possible foul and dragged him down in response to the ground…Rojas! HE GONE! That meant Puebla would be a man down for the entire second half. Then in the 51st minute…PENAL-TY! Hector Schmidt with the Amarilla on a scoring opportunity meant Pumas got a penalty kick, and Pablo Barrera converted for a 1-0 Pumas lead. About 10 minutes later Matias Britos added a second goal for a 2-0 advantage. Then in the 69th minute Francisco Torres was called on a hard tackle…Rojas! HE GONE! Puebla was now 2 men down for 20+ minutes! Pumas took advantage with Barrera getting his second goal of the game in the 80th minute for the final margin. As a result of the win, Pumas clinches the final playoff spot up for grabs, and Monterrey has been bumped out of the playoffs. Pumas finishes #6 and will play Tigres in the first round. Both ejected Puebla players will miss at least the first game of the next tournament.
