In the Friday night game of the week, Tijuana had a chance to lock up the Apertura 2016 regular-season championship but a bad bounce late cost them points and ultimately a 2-1 upset loss at Veracruz. The hosts took a surprise lead just under 7 minutes in thanks to an Augustin Vuletich goal, but tournament scoring leader Dayro Moreno got Tijuana on the board with his 11th goal in the 35th minute. The game seemed headed for a tie until the 86th minute-on a Veracruz corner kick the ball deflected off Tijuana’s Michael Orozco’s chest and midsection and took a bad bounce and roll the wrong way for a fluke own goal and what would be the final margin. The hosts also didn’t go easy on Tijuana physically, as Veracruz racked up 5 Amarillas in the game to Tijuana’s 2. With the loss, the door is now open for Pachuca or Tigres to claim the top spot tomorrow, while Tijuana could fall to as low as #3. With the win, Veracruz gets a big boost towards avoiding demotion after the season and also will stay out of the cellar-their win means Jaguares will finish last in this tournament regardless of tomorrow’s results.
